Article Abstract:
Environmental factors and lifestyle differences may explain the high prevalence of asthma in Western countries and the near-absence of the hypersensitive respiratory disease in Africa. Early exposure to parasites and allergens, outdoor air pollution, and household contaminants may play a role in the development of the disease.

U.S. deaths from pneumonia
Article Abstract:
The number of cases and deaths attributed to pneumonia continues to decrease as treatment, preventive measures and educational/information programs continue to improve. Concern is still centered on older people as the disease is likely to make them prone to life-threatening complications.

Lung cancer in US males
Article Abstract:
The number of deaths due to smoking-related lung cancer continues to rise despite the decline in number of smokers. Statistics presented by the CDC revealed that in 1997, 28% of the 420,000 Americans who died from smoking-related causes, died of lung cancer.
