Banking on a bridge
Article Abstract:
The construction of approach embankments for the new Charter Oak Bridge in Hartford, CT, involved the creation of a design which is stable and prevents the excessive settling of the structure. The project engineers had to deal with constraints which resulted from the site's deep soft clay and had aimed to minimize impact on existing nearby facilities. The varied subsurface characteristics between the two sides of the river resulted in two different and unconventional design approaches which cost more but reduced design and construction time. The project was completed in 1991.
