Banking on bioengineering
Article Abstract:
The Hamilton County Park District encountered a problem in the early 1990s when scour and fluctuating river levels eroded the riverbank on a 240 m section of the Little Miami River. The erosion threatened to send massive amounts of sediments into the river and cause extensive damage to a nearby marina. The park district implemented a bioengineered bank stabilization program on Little Miami River in 1997. The plan stabilized the riverbank, controlled damage on natural resources and maintained the aesthetics of the river by including vegetation in the design.

Soil bioengineering takes root
Article Abstract:
Watershed equilibrium nationwide is threatened by human activities which cause soil erosion. The restoration of water system functionality has traditionally been based on hard technology solutions. Soil bioengineering promises to be a viable, encompassing, ultimately low-cost alternative solution to watershed restoration, rehabilitation and reclamation. The technique exploits the benefits of vegetation for erosion control and geological and hydrological slope stability.

Putting wetlands to work
Article Abstract:
Wetlands have emerged as the environmental solution of choice to the issue of wastewater treatment using natural means. Wastewater has traditionally been handled using hard technological solutions. These traditional technologies have been found inadequate to handle all wastewater requirements worldwide. Time and an increased comprehension of nature's cleansing processes have proven the many benefits of using wetland-based wastewater treatment systems.
