Best of both worlds
Article Abstract:
Engineers have created a floor-by-floor computer simulation of the 76-story Columbia Seafirst Center in Seattle, WA. It was built in 1986 and is one of the first buildings to use composite columns. It was built with three large composite columns which provide axial stiffness to the tower and resist overturning forces. However, the columns have experienced axial shortening due to applied forces, shrinkage and creep. The simulation will study Seafirst Center's loading history, time-dependent material properties and construction sequence.

Article Abstract:
The Postgraduate Training Partnerships program between Research and Technology Organizations (RTOs) and universities is a project that aims to train postgraduates for employment in the commercial sector. The participants are immersed in the commercial environment, receive formal training in core competencies and are required to submit a research paper with a topic that is approved by an RTO and the university involved. Majority in the first batch of participants are now employed in the industrial sector.

Achieving the best in a real world
Article Abstract:
Taguchi Methods have been used in Japan's electrical industry since 1949 and are becoming more popular. They can be used to improve quality and cut costs by making the most of product design and manufacturing, in a three stage process. Quality can be improved during development using system design to produce initial specifications, parameter design to recognise tolerances to manufacturing variations and tolerance design to specifiy allowable ranges or tolerances.
