Article Abstract:
The aims of unification for the engineering profession are to provide members a unified voice and to regulate and promote competence through continuing professional development. The aim is also to encourage students in school to take up engineering and provide proper education right from the school level. A new Engineering Council with a democratically elected Senate of Institution representatives, individual engineers and Privy Council nominated members formed in Jan 1996 will allow closer cooperation among all concerned.

European aspirations
Article Abstract:
The 1996 European Designer trade fair highlighted the growing importance of industrial design services. The trade fair also gave recognition to ecological design firm O2 Netherlands and design management expert Johann Tomforde whose firm, MC Micro Compact Car AG, will introduce the 'Smart" city car in Europe in 1998. They were the winners in the European Designer of the Year Awards. The trade fair also witnessed the launch of the Strategic Design Alliance which is a consortium of 11 design firms and design promoters.
