Bioconcentration of polycyclic aromatic compounds from sediments to muscle of finfish
Article Abstract:
Muscle of male winter flounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanus, exposed to various concentrations of Hibernia crude oil in sediments for four months in winter showed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations that are 25-50 times higher than normal levels. Other alkylated polycyclic aromatic compounds including naphthalenes and phenanthrenes were also detected. Measurement of the accumulation of the compounds in the sediments revealed higher biota-sediment accumulation factors in more soluble PAH. This could be explained by the high molecular weight of less soluble PAH, which require a longer time to reach steady state.

Sensing the fugacity of hydrophobic organic chemicals in aqueous systems
Article Abstract:
A headspace system capable of titrating sorbing materials and determining fugacity response is discussed. Octanol, humic acids and sediment were added to selected chlorobenzenes as test reagents. Air samples were subjected to chromatographic analysis. Established partitioning principles were upheld by the results. The effects of added sorbents or cosolvents on truly dissolved fugacities were accurately measured by the technique.

Stable carbon isotopic apportionment of individual polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in St. John's Harbour, Newfoundland
Article Abstract:
The primary source inputs of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments in St. John's Harbor, Newfoundland, were investigated using molecular abundance and carbon isotope measurements. The results showed that some 50%-80% of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon input originate from combustion, most probably vehicular emissions from the nearby city. The remainder is believed to come from direct petroleum-related contribution.
