Body of evidence
Article Abstract:
Research groups are focusing on improvising automobile crash test dummies to provide more information at lower cost. The proposed Bioman 4 dummy will be made of polymers resembling human flesh and will accomodate more integrated sensors. Los Alamos National Laboratory is building a virtual safety laboratory to develop a computer modeling system for improving crash test results, and reducing the tests required to ensure the safety of vehicles. The system will assess injury potential by combining mechanical crash responses to those of the occupants, and reduce design-to-production time.

Commencing countdown
Article Abstract:
Despite forecasts that day trips in orbit would be commonplace by the beginning of the 21st century, the pace of space developments has been hindered, not by lack of engineering technology but by politics, says Mark Hempsell, lecturer in space technology at Bristol University, England. The process remains slow, with shrinking space budgets forcing the private sector into designing reusable launch vehicles. Meanwhile, as the technology becomes cheaper, private launch groups are increasing competing with national organisations.

Animal magic
Article Abstract:
Design engineer Eddie Paul designed an ocean-going full scale replica of a Great White shark for the Cousteau family, and has worked on stunt ramps and cars for the TV show The Dukes of Hazzard, and he customized 30 vintage cars for the musical film, Grease. His business comprises five companies, and film and TV engineering is only one of the activities. He is currently working on the design of an internal combustion engine with just seven moving parts.
