Article Abstract:
Designers of the Petronas Tower, Malaysia, encountered problems on how to strengthen the bedrock which would bear the 600,000 metric ton weight of the two towers. To address the problem, designers used massive concrete-filled piers to avoid the risks of building collapse.

New Haven-based Cesar Pelli and Associates was granted the privilege to design the world's tallest building, the Petronas Twin Towers, in 1991. The firm was chosen according to technical, economic, philosophical and aesthetic standards.
