Suspension bridges unplugged
Article Abstract:
The designs of suspension bridges, such as the Delaware Memorial Bridge, were reassessed to improve their seismic structural stabilities. It was established that anchorages of suspension bridges can move in resonance with seismic activities which may result to the bridge's heavy damage. To prevent this, it was proposed that a viscous damper be added between the anchorage and the deck to isolate the structures and reduce displacements. The use of viscous dampers is a superior retrofit strategy for the anchorage coupling effect.

Positively not pedestrian
Article Abstract:
OBEC Consulting Engineers has used innovative cable sheathing in its design for a new pedestrian suspension bridge in Eugene, Oregon. The design had to meet criteria including low maintenance and aesthetic appeal. Sealing the structural cables of the suspension bridge offers a solution for both these requirement through the reduction of corrosion. The designers have also accounted for other criteria including wind resistance, no river piers, the provision of observation areas, and an attractive aspect to river level.
