Calibration of surface complexation models

Article Abstract:

The adsorption of two anionic contaminants on goethite was discused. The study which aimed to generate a consistent and comprehensive single-solute data base, resulted to two self-consistent sets of adsorption constants. Oxalate and chromate were subjected to x-ray diffraction to confirm their crystaline purity. Acidity, ionic strength, adsorbate and adsorbent concentration were the functions used to examine their adsorption. Diffuse- layer model and triple-layer model were used to analyze the data. Similarity in the intrinsic affinity of these anions for both oxides was ascertained.

Surface complexation modeling of competitive adsorption

Article Abstract:

The determination of the extent of competitive oxalate and chromate adsorption on goethite and the validity of two surface complexation models' predicting capacity are discussed. Adsorption was measured as a function of acidity in goehtite suspensions at constant ionic strength and temperature. Homogenous sites were assumed in modeling the data using diffuse-layer and triple-layer models. It was found that chromate has a higher affinity with the goethite surface although the two models maintained poor predictive capabilities for binary solute adsorptions.

Structure and behavior of colloidal material

Article Abstract:

Submicrometer colloidal material of rivers and lakes are evaluated to secure specific information on the nature and properties of aquatic colloids, macromolecules and their aggregates. Water samples with colloidal material are unstable systems, where the removal of a sample will change an open aquatic system into a closed structure. Aggregation and microbial activity will transform the system's composition.
