Central Artery project dominates Geo-Institute debut
Article Abstract:
The Central Artery/Tunnel in Boston, MA, an $8 billion project which is being handled by four companies, was the topic discussed during the Geo-Institute conference. The project designers showed that plans are carefully laid to balance the construction cost without putting the project at risk. Several problems regarding the project such as constructing the tunnel in an urbanized area and construction site's stability were raised and possible solutions were presented. Other related topics such as geophysics and spatial analysis in soil and landslides were also dealt with in the conference.

True costs of underground construction assessed at No-Dig '92
Article Abstract:
The No-Dig '92 conference in Washington, D.C., addressed the life cycle, environmental and social costs of trenchless against open-cut construction. Faced with an economically stressed public sector owner, the cost of using either construction technique has to be warranted. The varied points taken up included a cost-benefit analysis for evaluating sewer reconstruction projects, use of a computer model to appraise concealed expenditures, a formula to assess social costs like vibration and air pollution and certain legal aspects of underground construction.
