Caltrans to retrofit double-deck bridges
Article Abstract:
University of California, San Diego researchers and California Dept of Transportation personnel have devised a method of reinforcing elevated highway to make them more earthquake-resistant. This method will be used to repair the damaged Central and Southern Viaducts in San Francisco in 1993. The design entails the addition of concrete edge beams connected to the deck and columns by prestressed concrete cap beams and the replacement of square columns by circular columns. The system will minimize repair costs in case an earthquake occurs.

Caltrans settlement brings engineering in-house
Article Abstract:
The lawsuit filed by the Professional Engineers in California Government against the California Dept of Transportation (Caltrans) was settled through an agreement that will restrict the employment of private companies for state projects. The important terms of the settlement were the termination of 24 existing seismic contracts with private engineering firms and the hiring of state-employed engineers for the projects. Also, the case was settled to prevent any delay that might affect the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge construction.
