Can a symbol make you a better engineer?
Article Abstract:
Civil engineers have an obligation to promote professionalism in the quality of their work. They are urged to follow ethical guidelines associated with their profession and are advised to adhere to standards related to the design and workmanship of their projects. Civil engineers should also promote a sense of pride, honor and prestige in their work. Moreover, they should see to it that their work attitude conforms to the needs of society, always taking into consideration the safety of the people.

Ethics: A professional concern
Article Abstract:
In a poll of honesty and ethical standards in the professions, engineering was fifth out of 26 professions. The Code of Ethics was adopted by the ASCE in 1914 and considers not just laws or codes specifically for engineering practice, but also the moral concerns of society. However the Code should be seen as a beginning, as there are many 'gray areas' that are encountered daily by civil engineers.

Article Abstract:
The article examines the ethical aspects of the civil engineering profession with reference to civil engineers accepting and performing jobs that are outside their expertise. The merits and drawbacks of hiring outside help are discussed.
