Changes in the Carbon Balance of Tropical Forests: Evidence from Long-Term Plots
Article Abstract:
There are conflicting reports of the carbon dioxide levels in the Amazon rain forest using micrometeorological research and atmospheric transport models. Since tropical rainforests account for up to 40% of the CO2 stored in the earth's atmosphere, a small change in the level of CO2 would significantly impact the global CO2 levels. A third technique, using permanent sample plots could yield CO2 estimates that are more accurate.

If a tree falls in the forest...
Article Abstract:
J. Grace et al, in a 1995 study, questioned the theory that old-growth tropical rain forests are steady-state systems. The researchers found that the Amazon region had a carbon uptake of 0.6 gigatons per year, a surprisingly high amount.

Evaluating turnover in tropical forests
Article Abstract:
The time interval between samplings can affect the results in calculations of the rate of forest turnover. The effects of this possibility on a recent report on forest turnover rate in the tropics are discussed.
