Coal is the world's most abundant fossil fuel and, if various experimental technologies are successful, it also could become a clean-burning energy source. One such experiment, with the potential for removing most of the sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from coal, is described.

Offshore oil: how deep can they go?
Article Abstract:
The technology for deep-water oil drilling, in depths up to 10,000 feet, is now available, but the economic feasibility is still in question. Even so, it seems only a matter of time until such oil drilling does take place. Advances in oil-drilling technology are discussed.

New designs for oil tankers
Article Abstract:
Several adjustments in tanker construction, including the use of double hulls, are being proposed in an effort to reduce the risk of oil spills. An estimated 60% less oil would have spilled from the Exxon Valdez if the ship had been double-hulled.
