Cleanup efforts continue at Oakland fire site
Article Abstract:
Two engineering companies undertook the task of cleaning up Oakland Hills and preventing soil erosion as a result of a destructive fire that ravaged the vicinity in Oct 1992. ICF Kaiser Engineers performed the cleanup operations which included road clearing and eliminating immediate hazards. Meanwhile, Woodward-Clyde Consultants will implement an erosion-control scheme that will counteract potential damages of wind and rain and prepare the area for replanting.

Double diamonds: new brand for a Texas bridge
Article Abstract:
The Fred Hartman Bridge, located between Baytown and LaPorte, TX, is the first suspension bridge in the US to use double-diamond towers for structural support. The uniquely-designed towers, which were fabricated on-site using hollow concrete construction, are structurally more stable than H-shaped towers. The twin-deck bridge will carry two separate roadways and is expected to ease the area's traffic congestion by replacing the 39-year-old Baytown Tunnel.
