Conceptual basis and equilibrium assessments
Article Abstract:
Research was done at the University of Michigan's Environmental and Water Resources Engineering section on contaminant sorption by soils and sediments. The research indicated that sorption processes varied depending on the solute-solid combination in question and displayed many different reaction phenomena. As a result, a distributed reactivity model was developed to address the different distributions of sorption reactions and mechanisms.

The isosteric heat approach and its application to model inorganic sorbents
Article Abstract:
The sorption of phenanthrene by hydrophilic sorbents is endothermic and the sorption by hydrophobic sorbents is exothermic, according to an analysis of the isosteric heats of sorption. The hydrophilic sorbents used were alpha-Al2O3 and three mesoporous silica gels. The hydrophobic sorbent used was graphite. The low levels of sorption occurring at the hydrophilic surfaces were the result of entropy.

Mechanistic implications of desorption under superficial fluid conditions
Article Abstract:
The use of supercritical carbon dioxide (SC CO2) is an effective solvent in determining desorptive equilibria of soils, but oxygen content and swelling behavior should be accounted for when soil organic material is present. Since SC CO2 use can produce isothermally significant results with changing pressure, its use speeds the time it takes to calculate desorptive equilibria.
