Conference tracks progress of trenchless technologies
Article Abstract:
The International No-Dig '96 conference in Apr 1996 explored the benefits of and new developments in trenchless pipeline construction and rehabilitation technologies. Speakers discussed various projects involving microtunneling, such as the Los Angeles, CA, sewer replacement project; a mixed soil sewer project in Honolulu, HI; and an ongoing infiltration/inflow reduction program in Miami and Dade Counties, FL. A Windows-based pipe installation design software, DrillPath, was also introduced by Michael J. Kirby of Jason Consultants International. Benefits included reduced cost and traffic interference.

GIS conference highlights broadly focused systems
Article Abstract:
The AM/FM International's 15th annual conference held on Apr 92 focused on the application, benefits and hazards of automated mapping, facilities management and geographic information systems. Seminars and technical discussions discussed information management and its implementation as illustrated by the Wisconsin's Land Information Board which delegated tasks to its counties. There were also suggestions on the standardization of data processing methods with emphasis on the need for sound programs with management support prior to asking for proposals and embarking on a project.

Regulatory battles reign at hydropower conference
Article Abstract:
The proper balance of power and nonpower values and role of government are controversial among hydroelectric-dam owners, environmentalists and recreational interests. A great need exists to recognize factors associated with dam construction that affect the environment and to take remedial action. This could mean an increase in dam construction costs. This is one of the issues discussed in a conference, Waterpower 95, San Francisco, held in July 1995.
