Technology policies and programmes in manufacturing: toward coherence and impact
Article Abstract:
Technology develops and functions through regularly-occurring processes. Thus, any regulation which is established for technology must consider the principles by which technology operates. Technology policy makers for the manufacturing industry must also come from various sectors to ensure a comprehensive approach to policy-making. Technology policies should be measured against the criteria of comprehensiveness, coherence, focus, and empirical knowledge. Likewise, policy makers must research, balance between development and deployment, and consider smaller manufacturers and regional variation, among others, in setting technology regulations.

Factors affecting decision making in the implementation of manufacturing technology
Article Abstract:
An investigation of the factors that affect decision making in the procurement of manufacturing technology reveals that the number of significant factors and the factors that are 'very significant' to a company increase with the size of the firm. Such finding shows that the concerns of small companies are concentrated on specific points. The implementation of new technology addresses a few of these points and offers only a short-term solution. The differing degree of importance of the factors was found to be a function of different criteria.

Cross-border networking in the Saar-Lor-Lux region? Risks and opportunities of regional economic policies
Article Abstract:
The risks and opportunities of Saarland and Lorraine, peripheral regions at the German-French border regional economic policies are detailed in particular the chances of gaining possible inter-regional advantages and synergies through cross-border networking activities. Both regions are trying to compensate for job losses in the coal, iron and steel industry by building up new industrial networks and by establishing an 'up-grading' strategy.
