Cosmic age controversy is overstated

Article Abstract:

The current controversy over stars which seem to be older than the universe itself is only the latest of historical discrepancies. Early calculations made the earth younger than the life on it and the universe younger than the earth. Better data and analyses will eventually solve the problem.

Does a cosmic ray gap open the door on new physics?

Article Abstract:

A gap in the cosmic-ray spectrum suggest that the highest-energy rays come from a source separate from that of cosmic rays of lower energies. A research team that includes Fermilab suggest the highest-energy cosmic rays arise from exotic topological defects in the structure of the universe.

Geophysicists are using data on solar activity and earth's magnetic field to produce forecasts of northern light activity in Alaska and broadcasting them on the World Wide Web. The forecasts are being used by scientists, tourists and local residents.
