Countdown: numbers alone are no guarantee that a species is safe from extinction
Article Abstract:
The story about extinction of passenger pigeons demonstrate how harmful the impact of human activities can be on even the commonest species. Forest destruction and bird-hunting hastened their extinction. Unless humans realize their responsibility to the environment, they too might face that same fate.

Farewell to Nova Scotia: the CSS Baffin will go no more a'sailing
Article Abstract:
The once regal Canadian oceanographic ship, the CSS Baffin, finally took its final voyage after 35 years of service to science. With a trail of successful exploratory cruises to her credit, it is disheartening to see her stripped of her name and 'Crown Asset #1991-01' painted on her bow and stern.
