A field study of lionesses defending their territory against perceived strangers defied conventional models of altruistic animal behavior. Brave lionesses, although repeatedly paired with a coward, never punished their partner or varied their self-endangering behavior of defending the pride.

Getting the poop on baboon DNA

Julie Constable has isolated nuclear DNA from baboon feces, providing a noninvasive method for proving fatherhood in genetic studies. Her team identified microsatellite primers in the baboon DNA, marking sequences that help the PCR amplification process, by using human primers.
