The European Commission is about to submit for approval the next five-year research plan, Framework 5. Research groups who have acted as consultants already complain that the plan does not make needed bureaucratic reforms and neglects basic science. The history and structure of Framework is discussed.

Europe starts search for lone electron

The European Union launched the Fabrication and Architecture of Single- Electron Memories (FASEM) program, which aims to develop a computer chip by 2015 that uses single electrons to store each bit of information. The $3.7-billion program will involve 8 labs in 5 countries.

Trapped buckyball turns up the amp

Researchers have created an electro-mechanical amplifier from a single buckyball by using the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope to change the molecule's resistance. Other molecules may have similar properties.
