Reformers fight to draw more students into science
Article Abstract:
The Japanese system is successful at teaching basic science and math skills, but some science teachers see a need for reform. The pace of the science curriculum leaves little time to foster imaginative work. Too much emphasis is placed on rote learning to pass college entrance exams.

Article Abstract:
Japan needs to develop individuality and tolerance for debate as it reforms its academic science education to become a major player in global research. A more flexible system for educating and employing scientists will make science a more attractive career.
