DNA Sequences Provide Grist for Microbiologists
Article Abstract:
Molecular biologist Barton Slatko joined the Filarial Genome Project in time to join his colleagues in discovering that filaria worms are frequently infected by the Wolbachia bacterium. The filaria worms are responsible for infecting 120 million people throughout the world and, since the bacterium seems to play a part in the worm's reprodution it may also be instrumental in its control.

Microbiologists explore life's rich, hidden kingdoms
Article Abstract:
A Univ of Illinois gene-sequence database reveals that the microbial world is much more diverse than ever imagined. Microbes account for three distinct kingdoms of life and far outnumber plants and animals. Direct comparison of DNA identified varities that could not be devined by growing cultures.

The incredible shrinking laboratory
Article Abstract:
Researchers are using channels etched on microchips to perform chemical analyses that previously required much bulkier equipment. The new devices require smaller amounts of reagents and produce reactions in less time.
