Daunting challenges confront borderlands
Article Abstract:
Cities and townships that sprang up around maquiladoras, the U.S. owned factories that were set up along U.S. and Mexico border to take advantage of the Mexico's cheap labor and lax environmental regulations face severe social, economic and political problems. The places such as El Paso, McAllen, and Brownsville often lack potable water, sanitary waste disposal systems, and paved roads. Five of the six poorest Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) in the U.S. are located in this region. These problems are unlikely to be solved soon, even if the NAFTA generates new economic activity in the region.

Legacy of cold war still plagues Russia
Article Abstract:
Radioactive pollution in Russia and the former states of the Soviet Union pose a threat to the environment and the health of the people. Reprocessing of Plutonium and ineffective nuclear waste management system are the two important contributors to radioactive pollution. Nuclear complexes such as Mayak and Tomsk are some of the major radioactive pollutants. Indiscriminate dumping of nuclear materials into the sea also causes health hazards and environmental damages.
