Defusing the millenium bomb
Article Abstract:
Southfield, MI-based engineering firm Giffels Assoc Inc is addressing the Year 2000 transition date-change computer problem via a six-step approach. All the members of the business organization are first informed of the problem. The company then determines the systems which may be affected by the problem and evaluates each of the elements. It then identifies the courses of action needed to address the problem and verifies whether the solutions are practicable. Finally, the company implements the measures and fine-tunes minor problems that may arise.

Defusing airline terrorism
Article Abstract:
A spate of airline bombings have spurred the Federal Aviation Administration to order the installment of 500 bomb detection units into airports for testing. Ten detection systems are being tested but not one of them can meet the FAA's speed and accuracy standards. The systems include X-ray machines, magnetic resonance imagers and chemical vapor analyzers. The installment of these devices are likely to spark debates on the potential violation of civil rights and on who will shoulder the brunt of the cost of these expensive equipment.

Chicago, IL, officials have approved the conceptual plans for a $150-million, 24.6-acre, cultural and recreational center in Grant Park that will have an underground parking garage and 1,500-seat theater. The project will be financed with city revenue bonds and private donations. The site of the proposed facility is unstable, thus, 770 concrete caissons with 10-ft to 10.5-ft diameters extending as deep as 73 ft below grade will be used for the foundation.
