Designers abroad
Article Abstract:
UK manufacturers do not recognize the role of design in commercial success. Designer fees are decreasing in the country while manufacturers are reducing their investments on research and development. Designers, meanwhile are seeing their ideas rejected. This trend should be reversed because the use of design engineering can lead to the opening of new markets, an increase in exports, an increase in sales and a rise in profits. The competitiveness of UK firms and of the whole country itself will be enhanced through the use of design services.

Designers clean up
Article Abstract:
Designers of the future will need to consider the environmental impact of their products and this means understanding the environmental impact of raw materials through to manufacturing, application and disposal. A study to define how a product should be assessed, concentrated on washing machines, and found that the major part of its impact on the environment is its use accounting for 95% of total impact. This indicates that to reduce environmental impact, washing machines should designed to be more efficient.

The cost of clean air
