Detoxification of microcystines (cyanobacterial hepatotoxins) using TiO2 photocatalytic oxidation
Article Abstract:
Titanium dioxide and ultraviolet light are shown here to be an efficient means of eliminating hepatotoxin-producing cyanobacteria (microcystins) from drinking water. The bacteria, which has been linked to human mortality, and liver cancer, can exist in water with varying pH and temperature levels. Conventional treatment involves chlorine or ozone. Ultraviolet light by itself is inefficient in killing the bacteria. However, jointly TiO2 and photocatalysis quickly degrades microcystins even at high concentrations of the bacteria. The researchers point out that they tested only one of 60 variants of the bacteria. Even so, the researchers suggest that similarities in the variants will mean the tested detoxification method will prove effective against all strains.

Substrate recycling scheme for tetrachloro-p-benzoquinone using bilirubin oxidase and NADH
Article Abstract:
Due to the highly toxic character of Pentachlorophenol (PCP), and its widespread contamination of ground and surface water, researchers sought to find a substrate recycling assay for PCP. Creating this assay required finding an enzyme that would not interact with NADH, while converting TCHQ to TCBQ to complete the recycling scheme. Bilirubin oxidase, obtained from Myrothecium verrucaria accomplished both tasks. Because NADH becomes unstable below pH 5, the TCBQ assay was optimal at pH 5.5. With pH rates above 6.5, the assay did not produce reliable results.
