Differences in HIV strands may underlie disease patterns

Retrovirologist Max Essex and Thai researchers reported that HIV-1 transmits preferentially through vaginal intercourse in developing countries and through anal intercourse and intravenous drug use in developed countries because different substrains of HIV-1 predominate in the different countries.

NIH director Harold Varmus defended disproportional spending on AIDS research at a House appropriations hearing, in response to suggestions that specific-disease funding should correlate more with health-care costs. He explained that AIDS is a public emergency, with a goal of an actual cure.
