Nature's way with composites
Article Abstract:
The University of Reading's Centre for Biomimetics in the UK studies natural structures with an eye to using their techniques in materials design. The center, a joint venture between the Engineering and Zoology departments, devised a composite that mimics wood's energy-absorbing characteristics and is stronger pound-for-pound than steel. It is also studying unique characteristics of the egg case of the dog fish, bone and antler and mother of pearl.
