Going it alone
Article Abstract:
Neil Johnson, director-general of the Engineering Employers' Federation, believes that the UK is operating without an industrial strategy and feels that the government needs to invest in manufacturing to ensure success. Johnson formed an initiative to write an industrial strategy for the UK which emphasises the importance of industry for the whole economy. Johnson believes that changes made recently by the government to boost industry are too short term, and that the govern needs to think to 2020 and beyond.

When you can't go it alone
Article Abstract:
Consultancies help British companies cut through the welter of new environmental legislation. They range from one-man shops that perform paper studies to major vendors that provide equipment and expertise. Most companies hire consultants because they lack in-house expertise, and it is not cost-effective to hire such staff. Environmental audits are popular, especially to comply with BS 7750; impact statements are required before expanding or building a plant.
