Downtown goes uptown in stainless steel
Article Abstract:
The suburban business district of Uptown Houston, TX, was beautified under a streetscape and mobility program. Created by Communication Arts and implemented by Walter P Moore and Assoc, the unique design incorporated a stainless steel motif. Streetlights, traffic signals and street signs made of stainless material were put in place while gateways at main intersections were erected to signal entry into the district. However, the most striking element of the design are the arches that span a boulevard. The result is an elegant, improved urban infrastructure.

State of the arts
Article Abstract:
The Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth, TX, utilized a structural support for the facility's seating pattern. A torsionally stiff support beam was used to accommodate the building's limited back span depth and horseshoe seating geometry. The facility also integrated a steel frame to accommodate concerns associated with building's acoustics. A mechanical ductwork system was used to fill up the hall's ceiling plenum chamber over the main audience section.

Domesticating steel
Article Abstract:
The rising price of lumber is forcing home builders to seek alternative technologies for the residential market. However, the use of steel framing technology has been hindered by the lack of codes and standards, resulting in slow growth for steel frame housing. The most difficult problem associated with steel frames is the lack of standard construction methods for use by regulators and contractors.
