The Hale-Bopp comet was first discovered on Jul 23, 1995, by independent observers Alan Hale and Thomas Bopp, and since has been observed by many thousands on earth and studied by scientists around the world. Of special interest have been the comet's material and origin.

Analysis with the ion microprobe reveals two important sources of meteoric stardust: red giants and supernovae. Information about stardust grains provides important information about nucleosynthesis and stellar evolution.
