EPA technology verification program hits its stride
Article Abstract:
EPA's Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) program has successfully tested the performance of eight commercially available technological instruments/equipment in spring 1998, bringing its total number of verifications to 12. The program, established in 1995, supervises and supports independent testing of environmental technology. The equipment tested included portable gas chromatograph/mass spectrometers, cone penetrometers and portable X-ray fluorescence analyzers. The ETV program, which is currently testing over 35 other products, has as its goal the verification of over 300 products by 2005.

Concentration of hazardous waste to determine listing
Article Abstract:
A proposed EPA rule will help companies avoid strict treatment and disposal requirements for any waste that contains hazardous chemicals. The new rule calls for industry to maintain concentrations of hazardous substances in their waste streams below set levels. Concentration levels for some 400 hazardous chemicals have been defined, and concentrations lower than these levels in companies' waste streams would not be classified as 'hazardous waste.' The rule was signed on Nov. 13, 1995.

Toxics Release Inventory expanded to cover seven new industries
Article Abstract:
Pres. Bill Clinton approved the addition of seven new industries to the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI). This means 6,100 companies, in addition to the 25,000 companies already included in the TRI, will yearly report their toxic chemical releases to the Environmental Protection Agency. The additional industries include electric utilities, commercial hazardous waste treatment facilities, coal- and metal-mining, and solvent recovery services.
