The Hubble Space Telescope has had some mechanical problems, but it still has provided researchers with revealing images of cosmic objects. The telescope has observed the Orion Nebula, the Homunculus nebula and the M 15 globular cluster.

Edwin Hubble and the expanding universe

Astronomer Edwin Powell Hubble developed the concept of the expanding universe, which replaced the concept of a static cosmos. The big bang theory was based partly on Hubble's research on the relationship between velocity and distance.

The most distant radio galaxies

Researchers have located the most distant galaxies by studying radio signals emitted by the galaxies. These galaxies existed when the universe, which is approximately 15 billion years old, was about 1.5 billion years old.
