Education for an environmentally sustainable future
Article Abstract:
A long-term effort in multidisciplinary environmental education is needed to provide professionals who can lead society toward a sustainable relationship between growing human populations and the environment. Universities and professional schools must integrate their traditional disciplinary divisions to teach holistic thinking and awareness of the interrelationships between all biological systems, economics and human activity. University presidents from 13 countries meeting at Tufts University's European Center produced a declaration of actions toward worldwide environmental education.

TiO2-assisted degradation of environmentally relevant organic compounds in wastewater using a novel fluidized bed photoreactor
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the titanium-dioxide-mediated photocatalytic degradation of the environmentally relevant organic compounds 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) and p-toluenesulfonic acid (PTSA). A new fluidized bed photoreactor was used to analyze the photocatalytic degradation process. The effect of chloride and bicarbonate on the process was also investigated. The intermediate photooxidation products were found to be more biodegradable than 4-CP and PTSA, the initial aromatic pollutants.

Green fees: charging for environmentally damaging activities
Article Abstract:
Green fees or charges on environmentally damaging activities are suggested as the means for raising the necessary funding for socially-oriented programs without depressing the economy. These charges simulataneously addresses pollution, traffic congestion and natural resource damage problems more efficiently compared to command-and-control regulations. With environmental charges, we can also lower our tax bills by acting on our principles.
