Enantiomeric ratios of chlordane-related compounds in air near the Great Lakes
Article Abstract:
The use of permethylated alpha- and sigma-cyclodextrin gas chromatographic columns proved efficient and highly accurate in determining the enantiomeric ratios (ER) of chiral compounds, one of the most potent air pollutants known to man. The approach was integrated with electron capture and negative ionization mass spectrometry methods in an effort to gain precise ER measurements of chiral compounds that are present in the Great Lake region. Results revealed that the overall ER of trans-chlordane is located between the 0.88+-0.22 equivalent range. Although some discrepancies exist in these measurements, they are mainly attributed to the difference in metabolic rates.

Partitioning of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans between the atmosphere and corn
Article Abstract:
Polychlorinated p-dioxin and dibenzofurans partitioning between corn kernels, corn leaves and the atmosphere is found to be dependent on temperature. Evaluation results show that both compounds were below the detection limits in corn kernels but were found in the atmospheric gas phase, atmospheric particle phase and corn leaves suggesting that vapor pressure plays an important role in the partitioning of both gas and particle phases to corn leaves.
