Acid Rain Reduced in Eastern United States
Article Abstract:
Phase I reductions of sulfur dioxide emissions stipulated by the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendment have resulted in significant reductions of acid rain. Sulfur dioxide emissions from industry have decreased 11.5% over the East. Sulfate ions declined 9.4% in precipitation in the Northeast. Hydrogen ions were found in concentrations 9.5% less. Nitrate ion concentration however did not change. The greatest reductions were found downwind in the Ohio River Valley where the regulation of coal fired plants was mandated. Additional reductions would clearly result from the Phase II program.

Enhanced effect of in-situ generated ammonium salts aerosols on the removal of NO(sub x) from simulated flue gas
Article Abstract:
Combined sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides removal from simulated flue gas is investigated with an enhanced wet electrostatic precipitator (wESP) that injects ammonia and/or ozone into the flue gas to create ammonium salts aerosols, enhancing sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides removal. The wESP system is described and the removal efficiency of the system is graphed for ozone injection with and without ammonia.
