Europe tries 'fast and cheap' missions

The European Space Agency is revamping its Horizon 2000 Program to support a class of small, flexible missions called 'Smart' missions. The Planck mission and the Far Infrared Space Telescope will be consolidated on a single spacecraft to save money.

New launcher to lift off with armada of plasma probes

The European Space Agency will launch an Ariane 5 rocket with a payload of four identical satellites known as Cluster in May 1996. The satellites will provide three-dimensional measurements of plasma structures in the magnetosphere.
