Extent of reductive dechlorination of chlorobenzoates in anoxic sediment slurries depends on the sequence of chlorine removal
Article Abstract:
Meta-dechlorination inhibits the complete reductive dechlorination of di- and trichlorobenzoates in sediment slurries. This was observed in a comparison of the sequence of reductive dechlorination for several chlorinated benzoates in unacclimated and acclimated anoxic sediment slurries. The comparison aimed to establish complete dechlorination of polychlorinated benzoates by inducing a specific sequence of reductive chlorine removal. Potential factors affecting the occurrence of ortho- or meta-dechlorinating microbial activities were examined.

Occurrence of some chlorinated enol lactones and cyclopentene-1,3-diones in chlorine-treated waters
Article Abstract:
Softwood chlorination stage liquor obtained from a pulp mill, chlorine-treated natural humic water and drinking water were analyzed for chlorinated enol lactones and cyclopentene-1,3-diones. Both chemicals were formed during the chlorination of softwood pulp and of water with humic material. The amount of unbleached pulp and the chlorine dose influenced the amount of chlorinated enol lactones and cyclopentene-1,3-diones produced.

Chlorine penetration into artificial biofilm is limited by a reaction-diffusion interaction
Article Abstract:
The formation of microbial biofilms on wetted surfaces of engineering systems poses risks to human health and the environment. In a model system using artificial biofilms of Pseudomonas aeruginosa dispersed in agarose gel, it is shown that biofilms retard the transport and penetration of chlorine. A reaction-diffusion interaction is suggested to be responsible for the retarded penetration of chlorine into biofilm.
