Computer simulations and wind tunnel tests have revealed a low pressure area behind the experimental X-30 aircraft that slows its acceleration through the speed of sound. Researchers are hoping that hydrogen fuel pumped outside the aircraft will burn and reduce the low pressure.

Nanoskins for Mars

A description is presented of the development of a nanoskin material which changes color when damaged. This material could be used to coat inflatable structures housing astronauts exploring the planet Mars and warn them of faults in the structures.
