Federal environmental justice plans go to Clinton
Article Abstract:
The EPA, together with several other federal agencies, are expected to complete the final draft of the 'environmental justice strategies' report for executive approval on Apr. 11, 1995. The report will outline the programs being undertaken by various agencies to prevent discrimination against low-income and minority populations. However, several groups under the EPA National Environmental Justice Advisory Council assailed the EPA draft for its lack of specifics. Among the issues being raised by these groups are the draft's lack of a detailed scheme that will enable communities to communicate easily with the EPA.

Environmental legislation faces tough ride in 1995
Article Abstract:
Environmental laws and regulations are expected to face difficulties in the Republican-led Congress in 1995. As part of their Contract with America proposal, the Republicans plan to require cost-benefit analyses and risk assessments for new regulations, create peer review panels with veto authority against expensive regulations and put an end to unannounced environmental and safety inspections. They also plan to limit the impact of existing regulations via appropriations and oversight. The Superfund, Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act are on top of the environmental agenda of Congress.

Stronger voice for environmental justice advocates?
Article Abstract:
Pres. Bill Clinton has issued an executive order supporting environmental justice and mandating that federal agencies suspend and review environmental policies which are believed to be detrimental to low-income, minority communities. The executive order also calls for the holding of public meetings which would allow community groups to participate in the development of environmental justice strategies.
