Influence of heterogeneity and sampling method on aqueous concentrations associated with NAPL dissolution
Article Abstract:
Researchers from the University of Arizona examined the how aqueous concentrations are affected by distributions of nonaqueous-phase liquid saturation such as residual trichloroethene (TCE). A dual-energy radiation system was used to measure the TCE saturation.

Field study of the partitioning tracer method for detection of dense nonaqueous phase liquid in a trichloroethene-contaminated aquifer
Article Abstract:
Dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) are pollutants often found in contaminated aquifers. The success of efforts to degrade DNAPLs has been limited by difficulties in identifying them in soil and water samples and the high cost of constructing DNAPL distribution maps. Herein, a new method of site characterization for NAPL is presented. The method involves the use of partitioning tracers to detect DNAPLs in a trichlorothene-contaminated aquifer.

Rate-limited sorption of hydrophobic organic compounds by soils with well-characterized organic matter
Article Abstract:
A study investigates the rate-limited sorption of homologous series hydrophobic organic compounds such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, alkylated benzenes, chlorinated benzenes and chlorinated alkenes by two soils with humic and fulvic acid. Results revealed that the solutes sorbed more strongly to the humic-dominated soil than the fulvic-dominated soil. Sorbate shape and structure appear to have a secondary influence on the total equilibrium sorption.
