Deregulation of the airlines, which began in 1978, has benefited consumers by lowering ticket prices up to 20%, but it has hurt the financial position of airlines by causing losses of about $8 billion between 1990 and 1993. Some policymakers are in favor of reregulation.

Economics has long had a close, if not always fruitful relationship with mathematics. Economists use tools from easy algebraic expressions to more complex differential topology. Some economists worry, however, that mathematics has outpaced research on economic theory.
