From wasteland to paradise
Article Abstract:
The Warm Springs Ponds near Butte, MT, were redesigned to conform with flood protection and structural stability standards. The existing embankment dams were upgraded and new dams were built to increase water flow in the ponds and ensure that waste materials will not contaminate neighboring areas during floods and earthquakes. Lime was used in the Silver Bow Creek to address heavy metal migration while increased pond detention was implemented to control the flow of runoff back to the creek. An additional flood bypass channel was constructed to protect the pond in the event of larger floods.

Creating wetlands
Article Abstract:
The Port of Long Beach in California needed to expand and upgrade its facilities. A mitigation plan that considered the public nature of the mitigation land site and the continued maintenance of the restored areas were required of them by the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). The Anaheim Bay project satisfied both requirements. The evaluation of the habitat involved meticulous choosing of animal species and to ensure their mix, quantitative valuation was used. The actual construction was performed in the same careful manner, thus ensuring its success.

Engineers lead Wetlands meeting
Article Abstract:
The American Society of Civil Engineers sponsored the Wetlands and River Restoration Conference in Denver, CO, in Mar 1998 to discuss concerns related to bioengineering. There were many papers presented that discussed how wetlands may be used for flood control or water treatment purposes. Conference participants also saw the need to produce manuals and guidelines to inform clients that the bioengineering methods being used are accepted in the industry.
