Fuel cell on wheels

Sanyo Electric Company Ltd has developed an electric automobile that uses a fuel cell, solar cells and nickel-cadmium batteries. The car, called 'Mirai 1,' achieves a top speed of 62 miles per hour and can run for two hours on one charge, but the fuel cell and solar panels extend the running time.

Shrinking memory beams

There have been several advances in laser beam technology, including Sanyo's development of an orange laser which would increase storage capacity of optical discs by 60% and American Telephone and Telegraph development of a technique to store 100 times as much information.
