Researchers have begun to study complex diseases with interconnected genetic and environmental factors, by locating families in which certain diseases are common. The problems of funding collection efforts, locating suitable families, and determining causation factors are discussed.

Researchers are divided about how quickly genome sequences should be released. Institutes such as the Washington University and the Sanger Centre release their data as it becomes available. Other institutions delay so that the scientists responsible for the work can profit from it.
