Article Abstract:
Speakers at the AAAS Science and Technology Colloquium had differing views on the role of government in supporting scientific research. Jack Gibbons, an adviser to President Clinton, felt the federal government needed to support science research to promote economic growth. Congressman George Miller disagreed, noting that science has failed to solve many social problems.

Pan-American science collaboration
Article Abstract:
Many Latin American scientists attended a May 1993 conference sponsored by the American Assn for the Advancement of Science, which was held to discuss the possibility of increasing international scientific cooperation. The significance of the conference, especially for Latin America, is discussed.
