Geophysicists peer into fiery core and icy ocean depths
Article Abstract:
Research reports at the 1996 American Geophysical Union meeting included a theory of how the earth's molten core could generate a magnetic field, measurements of seawater mixing in the South Atlantic Ocean and the discovery of a possible link in a series of volcanic eruptions.

Shock test squeezes core temperature
Article Abstract:
Landmark research in 1987 that attempted to estimate the temperature of the earth's core produced an extremely high result of 7,600 K. Other diamond-anvil lab experiments have come up with figures 1,000 K lower. The reliability of the research is still a matter of question.

Earth's solid iron core may skew its magnetic field
Article Abstract:
Paleomagnetist Bradford Clement and mineral physicist Lars Stixrude have proposed that the Earth's inner core generates a magnetic field that is strong enough to influence the magnetic field generated by the Earth's outer core.
